In the embroidery series Note to Self I challenge the contemporary ‘girly’ aesthetic using stereotypical pink and red as my palette. The minimalist approach is a direct reaction to my love of Concrete Poetry and specifically Ruth Wolf-Rehfeldt’s typewriter pieces, created from her home in Berlin between 1970-1989. In her work, she delicately dismantles language into visual form. I hope to echo the quiet resilience of her monotonic typing with my sewing machine. The ‘domestic’ format of a tea towel is the starting point of all 35 pieces. Text became a central motif in my work as I found myself diving into the world of translation and questioning language as a tool for understanding.
